Lyrics

KATYDID WALTZ by SARAH GOSLEE REED

In my bed last night just as it got dark,
A most curious sound met my ears,
What was outside came inside and began to play
A tune I hadn't heard in years.
The firefly stood on the edge of the sill
Wearing coattails, baton in the air.
He lit up the downbeat so all could see
The insect orchestra was there.

Katy oh Katydid, play me the song you did
    When summer turns into fall;
Katy oh Katydid, Katy oh Katydid
    Play me the Katydid Waltz.

There were crickets on woodwinds and locusts on brass,
Mosquitoes and gnats on the strings.
The percussion section was katydids - they
Played a waltz one-two-three with their wings.
They oompahed and scritch-scritched for hours until
The wee hours of the morning were near.
I may have been dreaming , but tonight all my friends
Will be gathered at my window to hear.

Katy oh Katydid, play me the song you did
    When summer turns into fall;
Katy oh Katydid, Katy oh Katydid
    Play me the Katydid Waltz.

Katy oh Katydid, play me the song you did
    When summer turns into fall;
Katy oh Katydid, Katy oh Katydid
    Play me the Katydid Waltz.

THE DAY WE LOST THE LIZARDS by SARAH GOSLEE REED

The day we lost the lizards it was something else
I came home to discover that the tank on the shelf
Had fallen to the floor thanks to a curious cat
Now the lizards had done their disappearing act

The day we lost the lizards (lost lizards)
The day we lost the lizards (lost lizards)
The day we lost the lizards made my head ache
The day we lost the lizards was an incredible mistake

I wanted back my lizards no matter what it took
We tore apart my room we checked in between the books
Inside the radiator on the window panes
Underneath my pillow, I even tried calling their names

The day we lost the lizards (lost lizards)
The day we lost the lizards (leaping lizards)
The day we lost the lizards was a moment of gloom
The day we lost the lizards I had to clean my room

When they’re warm they’re green, when they’re cold they’re brown
They climb the walls and hang from the ceiling upside down
Tiny’s like his name, Whopper’s big and fat
I wonder what they’d taste like to a cat

Apparently not much cause within forty-eight hours
Tiny was found hiding a-top a lego tower
Whopper’s tail was found underneath a floor lamp base
Disconnected from his body, now a new tail grows in its place

The day we found the lizards was a day that stood out
The day we found the lizards made me jump and shout
The day we found the lizards my mom called the school
The day we found the lizards I watched that old cat drool
The day we found the lizards I was floating on air
The day we found the lizards I felt like a millionaire
The day we found the lizards I went all out
The day we found the lizards ….I ate a Brussel sprout!

Story

Written in honor of the 20th anniversary of Earth Day by the 2nd and 3rd graders in Mrs. Portzline's class at East Elementary School, Mount Vernon, Ohio.

Lyrics

EARTHSONG by Sarah Goslee Reed and Jo Portzline's 1990 class at East School,
    Mount Vernon, Ohio

Let's go fishin' where it's clean;
We can walk along beside the stream.
When we get tired, we'll ride a horse.
Or we might take our bikes of course.
Let the insects protect the plants:
We don't need pesticides to kill the ants.
We like those spiders and ladybugs
Even though it's hard to give them hugs.

    CHORUS:
Oh give me bees (bees, bees) in flowers and trees (trees, trees)
A mountain stream (stream, stream) bubbling clean (clean, clean)
There will be no zone without the ozone
We've got to keep the earth healthy.

When we are walkin' we pick up cans;
When we get home we wash our hands.
And on our bikes though it makes us pant,
We take them all to the recycling plant.
When we play outside we like the air
To be squeaky clean, not merely fair.
We want those songbirds up in the sky
To have a peaceful place to fly.

    CHORUS:
Oh give me bees (bees, bees) in flowers and trees (trees, trees)
A mountain stream (stream, stream) bubbling clean (clean, clean)
There will be no zone without the ozone
We've got to keep the earth healthy.

Stories we read and write because it's fun.
We illustrate them, too, and when we're done,
We use the front and back of every piece,
So we don't waste paper, so we don't waste trees.
Each tree is special, no creature's too small.
To keep our earth green we need them all.
The plants need animals, animals need plants,
For we are all earth's inhabitants.

    CHORUS:
Oh give me bees (bees, bees) in flowers and trees (trees, trees)
A mountain stream (stream, stream) bubbling clean (clean, clean)
There will be no zone without the ozone
We've got to keep the earth healthy.

Lyrics

MAGIC POCKETS by SARAH GOSLEE REED

On our way to the restaurant,
Dad said I could order whatever I want.
So my sister and my brother sang us a song,
In my pocket was a whistle so I played along...
When we got to the place we had to sit
At a table in a booth at the back where it
Was a little bit dark so I used the light
That I carry in my pocket to see at night...

    CHORUS:
I've got it! I've got it! I've got it in my pocket:
A matchbox car and some rubber bands,
All the legos I can carry in one of my hands,
A pencil and eraser and a couple of crayons,
I've got 'em all right here,
I've got 'em all right here!

Afterward we had to hang around
With some friends that the folks knew from way 'cross town
Well we dug down deep cause we were bored,
We found a marble and some string and a very small sword...
Our car broke down on the way back home,
Called for HELP! on my pocket telephone.
Then my set of pocket wrenches saved the day,
We were happy home and safe without delay...

    CHORUS

So when you get dressed in the morning be sure
Pick something with pockets to fill with your
Favorite possessions  cause you never know
You may need to have them wherever you go...

And you can say you've got it! You’ve got it!  You’ve got it in your pocket:
A matchbox car and some rubber bands,
All the legos you can carry in one of my hands,
A pencil and eraser and a couple of crayons,
You've got 'em all right here,
You've got 'em all right here!

But what really messed up the crayons was the dryer!

Lyrics

WASHING MACHINE

CHORUS:
Before you wash your clothes you'd better check the pockets
Find a safe place for that treasure and lock it
Up until your clothes are clean,
Or it'll come out in the washing machine!

I went out to play with my favorite buddy,
Ran back inside for my silly putty.
QUICK! MOM can you tell me have you seen
My silly putty so pretty and green?
Oh, I had it in my shorts with my jelly beans,
Guess what she said....IT'S IN THE WASHING MACHINE!

    CHORUS:
Before you wash your shorts you’d better check the pockets
Find a safe place for that treasure and lock it
Up until your clothes are clean,
Or it'll come out in the washing machine!

I headed for the store with a hungry tummy
Thought I'd buy a snack with my allowance money.
QUICK! MOM can you tell me have you seen
Any dollar bills stuffed in a magazine?
Oh I had some in the pockets of my jeans
Guess what she said....IT'S IN THE WASHING MACHINE!

    CHORUS:
Before you wash your jeans you’d better check the pockets
Find a safe place for that treasure and lock it
Up until your clothes are clean,
Or it'll come out in the washing machine!

On the delicate cycle there were shirts of rayon,
Swimmin' around with an innocent crayon.
ALL the kids came runnin', MOM have you seen
Our fluorescent crayons that were fuschia & aquamarine?
Oh we hid them from the baby in her shirt,
Now they're mixin' with the water, soap, and dirt.
We didn't intend to be so mean,
But I think you'll understand why our mother SCREAMED!!!!IT'S IN THE WASHING MACHINE!

    CHORUS:
Before you wash your shirt you’d better check the pockets
Find a safe place for that treasure and lock it
Up until your clothes are clean,
Or it'll come out in the washing machine!

Lyrics

SMACK DAB!

Breakfast time, bedtime and in between
I smile or act nice and he gets mean
Even if I apologize
I can tell by the look that’s in his eyes
I’m under his full-fledged attack
No time to consult the zodiac
I’m the straw that broke the camel’s back!

In the middle of the day, in the middle of the night
Right in the middle of my brother’s fight
In the middle of the day, in the middle of the night
Smack Dab! in the middle of the morning

I only wanted to see her stuff
Didn’t touch it once - was that so much?
It’s still right there where it belongs
She’s on my case and I’m in the wrong
I do believe she thinks it’s war
There’s no way out she’s barred the door
And she’s sounding like a dinosaur!

In the middle of the day, in the middle of the night
Right in the middle of my sister’s fight
In the middle of the day, in the middle of the night
Smack Dab! in the middle of the morning

    Break -
I could walk the dog or bake a cake
I could read a book or rollerskate
I could clean my room or vegetate

In the middle of the day, in the middle of the night
NOT in the middle of my brother’s fight
In the middle of the day, in the middle of the night
NOT in the middle of my sister’s fight
In the middle of the day, in the middle of the night
No more! in the middle of the morning

Children are such delightful sponges ... absorbing the world around them through their senses.

Lyrics

I AM A SPONGE by SARAH GOSLEE REED

I am a sponge, sponge, sponge soaking up everything I see
All the colors in the world are here inside of me
So when your world is dull and gray, just come give me a hug
And underneath our feet will be a rainbow-colored rug!

I am a sponge, sponge, sponge soaking up everything I hear
Symphonies and conversations enter in my ear
So when you find the silence in your life too hard to stand
Give me a squeeze and dance away to my one sponge band.

I am a sponge, sponge, sponge soaking up everything I smell
The scent of trees and flowers are deep inside my wishing well
So when you need a breath of spring to brighten up your day
Just lean yourself against me, it will be the month of May.

I am a sponge, sponge, sponge soaking up everything on my tongue
Oranges and broccoli and snowflakes  are among
My favorite tastes so when you think your table’s looking bland
Slide your chair close to mine ‘cause here we’re on the gourmet plan.

I am a sponge, sponge, sponge soaking up everything I touch
Cool smooth stones and kitten’s paws and brambles in a bunch (ouch!)
If your sandbox is out of sand, just climb right up on me
And where your toes are treading, a warm white beach will be!

You are a sponge, sponge, sponge soaking up sights and sounds and tastes
Everything you smell and feel, oh nothing goes to waste
So when you have something to share - it may be great or small
Don’t forget your friends out there, give your favorite sponge a call!

GARDEN OF PLENTY by Sarah Goslee Reed and  ASP friends from Harts, WVa

CHORUS:
We will plant (we will plant)
    Plant our garden (garden)
Turn the ground (turn the ground)
    Into plenty (all sing plenty)
We will plant (we will plant)
    Plant our garden (garden)
And from one (and from one)
There will be twenty ( all sing twenty)

Reach our hands up toward heaven
Touch the blue and blazing sky
Gently walk through the forest
Brush the branches of trees so high

CHORUS

Breathe the sweet air of the mountains
Feel the rain upon our face
Join our hands at the table
Share our harvest with love and grace

Ending:  And from one we’ll all have plenty!
